There is kind of a lot of the inevitability of death, there is some immediate peril that is cut away from but is later revealed to have caused serious scarring (I don't want to say "mutilation" lightly but...), there is some serious long-term distress/imprisonment. Like, the themes re family/growing up/etc are definitely middle grade themes rather than YA themes, but the content is pretty heavy for middle-grade? 11-13s who don't want romance in every story, maybe?
