I have Yuletide recs! First and foremost this wonderful _Sorceress Comes to Call_ story that was written for meeee and is exactly what I wanted, yay! Post-canon and won't make sense if you haven't read the book.

The 12 Days By Any Other Name, wanderlustlover, 2k, Cordelia and life after.

Other recs:

Contain and Contained, partypaprika, Tortall, Alanna/Delia, 17k. This is not a pairing I ever would have thought of but I liked how it unfolded here.

made expressly for you, surgicalstainless, Saint of Steel, paladin shenanigans, 3k.

the way we touch (i wish i didn't like it so much, whatiwouldnotgive, Real Genius, Jordan femslash, 8k. Another pairing I never would have thought of but sure, Jordan should totally get a femslash ship.

just my job five days a week, Artifactrix, The Martian, Mark Watney back on Earth, 2k. A fun little post-canon postscript.

If our two loves be one, phoenixflight, Lord Peter Wimsey, Peter/Harriet and Peter/Bunter, 10k. Polyamory negotiations. Really well done.

Jeeves and the Birdcatcher's Costume, WyvernQuill, Jeeves/Wooster, 11k. Masquerade shenanigans.

Two really good Wrinkle In Time stories:

charles wallace murry vs the middle school time loop, TheBigCat, Charles Wallace in middle school, 12k.

known now in part, to be known in full, raspberryhunter, 7k. Meg from the canon timeline meets a Meg who focused on her career.

Portland, later on, Melannen, 1/0, post-canon, 3k. Tbh I hardly remember most of 1/0 but this was funny and meta and it was nice to see everyone doing well.

Two Warm Hands of Ghosts stories: Better in the dark, regshoe, 2k and That Would Make a Sick Heart Heal, regshoe, 9k, both the Laura/Pim I wanted to see in the world.

home at the end of the day, betony, Queen's Thief, 1k, name-on-wrist soulmarks.

someone will remember us, harborshore, Queen's Thief, 1k, poetry, theater and scholarship from an alternate universe where the Queen's Thief world is somewhere in our past.

(Apparently this was the last year for Queen's Thief being Yuletide-eligible. I was always intimidated by the idea of writing it; I can't remember now if I ever offered it and just matched elsewhere, or if I always chickened out of even offering it. It's weird to think of Yuletide without Queen's Thief, that's such a staple. And there was no Anne of Green Gables this year - maybe that Anne with an E TV show pushed it over the size limit?... no Young Wizards, although for that one it was nominated and there were requests and offers, I guess everyone just ended up writing something else. Jeeves may be sizing out. I guess Vorkosigans went out a couple of years ago, and this is all natural. Just weird.)

And finally here's what I wrote this year:

Vermutun and Versuch, To Shape a Dragon's Breath, 4k, in which Anequs reads an essay and thinks a bunch about chemistry.

Hi! This is my lucky thirteenth Yuletide! It's always fun for me to see what someone else does with a character or fandom I've been thinking about, so I hope you my writer have fun writing for me. I like a lot of different things (worldbuilding, romance, angst, humor, plot, smut, whatever) so anything that seems like an interesting story to tell is great. (And I'm fine with treats, if anyone else thinks anything here sounds fun!)

I don't have any particular universal triggers or do-not-wants. Except I guess that I dislike the word "pleasure" used as a verb.

My requests:

Also I never posted more Yuletide recs and at this point I'm probably not going to, but, hey, if anyone was curious, here's what I wrote. you cannot kill me in a way that matters, What Moves the Dead from the perspective of the fungus. Muahaha.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
I basically haven't done any Yuletide reading yet, but I got *two* awesome stories myself this year!

Merging||Emerging is a Translation State story that I will not even try to summarize because spoilers, but if you've read the novel I definitely recommend it, it's really well done.

Lost Souls is a Hidden Blade story I will also not try to summarize because spoilers, but is also really well done and I also definitely recommend it if you've seen the movie.

To pad out this post, here are my recs from Femslashex, which I read a couple weeks ago but never posted.

Soft and Supple When Alive, The Telling, Sutty/Pao.

searching for a light, Old Guard, Andy/Quynh.

there's nothing she won't burn, also Old Guard Andy/Quynh.

Hi! I've been doing Yuletide for awhile and it's always a good time! I always think it's neat to see someone else's take on a character I've been thinking about, so, I really hope you my writer have fun writing for me. I like a lot of different things - romance and angst and worldbuilding and humor and plot and smut. Whatever makes a good story that you're interested to tell. More under the cut. Read more... )

This was written for me! Three Times Kamala Thought About Revealing Her Identity And One Time She Didn't, Ms. Marvel, really good character voices and perfect small missing scenes.

Stuff I liked, in no particular order:

she gets you on her wavelength, Blue Castle, post-canon in Montreal.

The Blue Barn, the Blue Castle hockey AU I never knew I needed.

Kristy and the Worst Year Ever, a Kristy-centric BSC story in the TVverse.

something borrowed, Kristy has a tie crisis.

dear fellow traveler, Goblin Emperor, a ceremony.

they say love is a virtue (don't they?), Scholomance, post-canon.

This Eternal City, Call Me By Your Name, post-canon.

Shelter from the Storm, Earthsea, Yarrow and Vetch.

never taken for granite, Everything Everywhere All at Once, post-canon, rocks, relationships.

Making Nothing, Everything Everywhere All at Once, bagels.

empty hands, Left Hand of Darkness. I am sometimes a hard sell for fix-it fic in this canon (and there's an interesting pronoun choice where Genly Ai thinks of most Gethenians as they but Estraven as he, which on the one hand does feel like exactly what Genly Ai might do, but also, hmm) but there's some moments of it I really like.

The Ordinary Queen and the Amethyst Revolution, Ordinary Princess, cute post-canon. (But Algernon accidentally becomes Alphonse partway through, oops.)

Heuristic Analysis, Murderbot Diaries, post-Network Effect.

the weight at the center of the world, Queen's Thief, an AU.

as the wind turns, Queen's Thief, Kamet.

my wife doesn't know I hench, the evil sex ray made my employees do it, and more, Hench/Ask A Manager fic that went viral.

ETA: Here Won, Fire & Hemlock post-canon epistolary.

And this is me: Relocation Costs, "Homecoming is Just Another Word for the Sublimation of the Self".

Hi! I am so excited to be coming back to Yuletide after sitting it out last year. As always the thing I would like the most is for you my writer to have fun writing - I like little character moments and big zany plot moments and angst and humor and worldbuilding and romance so whatever seems to you like it's going to be interesting to write, I'm going to be there for it.

I don't have any triggers to avoid. There's a couple of story elements I'm often not into and would prefer that you avoid - the giving of lavish or costly gifts as a romantic gesture, stories about pets or pet ownership (with exceptions as noted), and the thing where female characters come down in a dress or otherwise more femmed up/glammed up than usual and their romantic interest is all excited about it. Just not my thing.

Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan

I have not been doing much Yuletide reading - I am very very deep in New Fandom Energy right now and despite my general love of Yuletide all I want to do is roll around in the magnificent back catalog of my new obsession like Scrooge McDuck in the coin pool. But here are a few recs:

Train That Will Take You. This was written for meeee and it's awesome! What would it be like to live and travel in the Ticket To Ride world.

his north star, Persuasion, Sophia did it on purpose.

the stuff dreams are made of (are someone else's nightmares), Calvin & Hobbes, Susie rescues Calvin from fairyland.

sing all your questions to sleep, Goblin Emperor, Maia gets sick and everyone takes care of him.

August Thirteenth, Jeeves, time loop.

her lodestone, Persuasion, oral as a virginity loophole. :)

An Evening Out, Think of England, switching. :)

Kristy's Big Crush, Baby-Sitters Club (2020). For anyone freaked out by two porn recs in a row there, have some adorable G-rated 13yo lesbians. :)

what a tale my thoughts could tell, the Carrie Vaughn story That Game We Played During the War. Epistolary, HEA.

Revenant, Terminator: Dark Fate. Living in a multiverse.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
Hi! Thank you so much for writing me a story! I love Yuletide and I hope you get to write something you'll have fun writing. Honestly the thing I want most is for you to write something you'll enjoy. Don't feel like you have to write humor if you're really more of an angst writer and don't feel like you have to write angst if you're really more of a humor writer, you know? I like a wide variety of stories: funny, fluffy, angsty, thinky, sexy, it's all good. I like small character moments and big tropey scenarios and stories that read like a middle chapter from something bigger that doesn't exist.

I don't have any triggers to avoid. There are a few common-ish story elements I dislike: pets and pet ownership, the giving of lavish or costly gifts, women having to dress up more feminine-ly to advance their romantic plots. Just not my thing.

The Avant Guards
Charlie Bravo

This comic is adorable and it needs to have fic about it! In the "college sports/gay romance" genre where the sport is basketball, the college is an art school, and the cast is full of queer people of color (which is more or less what I've said about it before). I asked for Charlie Bravo but I love the entire cast so anyone you want to focus on is great. I definitely ship Charlie/Liv and would be very into something romantic or pre-romantic about them but it could also be fun to find out more about the academic side of life at O'Keeffe or just some general college/team hijinks. I will admit I know basically nothing about basketball; if you *do* know things about basketball, feel free to write some basketball and dazzle me, otherwise feel free to totally leave out or gloss over any basketball content. The team could do a team-building exercise? Is someone failing a class, and needs someone else's help? Maybe there's a dance and some sexually-charged dancing! Maybe Tiffany accidentally casts a truth spell or love spell or something (or the team wants to convince her she did?)! Daemon AU! Someone is nude modeling for someone else's life drawing class! Bad blind date! There are like a thousand classic plots that could apply here and they would all be beautiful.

Chronin
Hatsu

I love everyone in this comic but am requesting Hatsu because I feel like I had less insight into her head than into Mirai's or Gilbert's and I just want *more* of her. I talked about Chronin volume 1 here and volume 2 here. I would love to see Hatsu's POV from any point during the story - when does she first realize she's interested in Mirai, and at what points does she consider acting on that? What's something that surprises her about the future, once she gets out of quarantine? How are her reactions to the future different than her mom's reactions? What is it like for Hatsu and Mirai to be beginning a relationship while Hatsu is going through three weeks of debriefing? How does Hatsu feel about seeing Gilbert again at the end? I do have a fondness for Hatsu/Mirai/Gilbert as the final ship situation, but I'll be just as happy either way if you'd prefer to write Hatsu and Mirai as an exclusive couple or Hatsu/Mirai/Gilbert as having a poly arrangement of some kind. Just please don't break up Hatsu and Mirai if you're writing post-canon. I also think there could be some very interesting canon divergence AUs here to explore - what if Mirai's beacon *does* work, at the start of volume 2? Does she ever come back? And where is Hatsu when she does? What if Azai is persuaded, and gives Gilbert back the backpack, but doesn't give them the three spare beacons? Does Mirai still go back to the future? And does she ever come back after *that*? And where is Hatsu when she does? (While we're here, let me admit to some minor confusion about names: Mirai addresses her as Hatsu while Hatsu calls her Mirai, but Hatsu's brother calls her Kako at one point, as does the professor at the end, which doesn't help clarify whether this is more or less familiar address. I think we-the-Chronin-fandom should just call her Hatsu since that's what Mirai calls her.)

Space Battle Lunchtime
Peony

This comic is adorable and it needs to have more fic about it! I love Peony/Neptunia and would love to see them together having adventures or quiet moments on Earth or out in space. Please don't write anything that breaks them up, although it's fine to write post-canon that just focuses on Peony if you'd prefer. I'd also be interested to see something from Peony's life before the first book. I am fine with stories that involve food or recipes (real or made-up) or stories that don't involve food. What would Peony's blog entries look like if she started a food blog? Funny kitchen disaster? What does Neptunia like or dislike about Earth? I have read volume 3 (yay!) so feel free to use or ignore that part of canon!

Ticket to Ride

I will admit, this is a last-minute addition - I never thought about fic for this game and then I found it in the tagset and now I can't stop thinking about it. If we match on this, I feel like a beautiful thing has already happened, and I see two great directions this could go.

A, what is it like to live and travel in the world of the game? Does everyone just take it for granted that you sometimes have to take enormously long and convoluted routes to go places, or are there freethinkers or rebels who suspect that travel could be simpler? Maybe a travel blogger is writing about their trip, or a high school or college team of some sort are trying to travel for a competition?

Or B, what do the AI players, if you play solo on the app, think is going on? How do they feel about it? What do they do when they're not playing? How do their strategies relate to their personalities? I like stories about ladies and am more interested in Marg Loughbot and Jane Stanbot (or BreretonBot, on the India board) than the AIs with more masculine icons. I play on the app a lot and have most of the achievements on most of the boards, some of which must seem particularly bizarre to the AIs, if they don't know about them.

Thank you so much! Yay Yuletide!

Every Day from This Day, canon-divergence, 9K.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
If you remember my favorite sff short story from last year, Octo-Heist in Progress, you may be interested to hear that I requested it as a Yuletide fandom and someone wrote me fanfic of it and it's *so good*. Pico! In space!!

Octo-Heist in Space, 4.6K of Pico excellence.

Hi! Thank you so much for writing me a story! I love Yuletide and I hope that you're getting to write something you'll have fun writing. :)

Bad blind date! There are like a thousand classic plots that could apply here and they would all be beautiful.

Octo-Heist In Progress
Pico

This was my favorite science fiction short story from 2018. It's only 7470 words long and you can read it online here. I fell in love with Pico immediately and would love a glimpse into his continuing adventures. Does he cross paths with Etta again? Get recaptured by someone and have to Great Escape/Shawshank Redemption his way out of new trouble? Is he liberating captive sea life from a lab or aquarium, leading a massive human prison breakout, taking down the global ID system? (Larson doesn't specify too much about the future so feel free to make it as weird/boring/utopian/dystopian as you'd like.) I like Pico as a fundamentally alien character who can't communicate with human characters except through his actions, but I would also love a Pico who has, for instance, stolen an AAC alternative communication device and is now trying to plan a billion-dollar heist with his human henchmen while limited to a few dozen pre-programmed phrases like "I'm hungry" and "I need the toilet". Maybe the newest recruit to the gang/revolutionary cell is surprised to find out their boss is an octopus? Or maybe Pico explores life in the ocean (and decides to stay? or return to the human world?). Or goes to space! I love space and I bet Pico could cause or solve all kinds of trouble there. Or maybe he just crashes Etta's blind date or something. Anything could happen, big or small. :) Pico is an exception to all of my fic preferences and if he wants to have an (aquatic!) pet or give extravagant presents, good for him. I don't mind if Pico takes damage in the course of a story but I do feel that any good Pico story ends with Pico triumphant and justice prevailing. (Justice in the chaotic, moral, anti-institutional sense...)

Chronin
Hatsu

I love everyone in this comic but am requesting Hatsu because I feel like I had less insight into her head than into Mirai's or Gilbert's and I just want *more* of her. Thank you so much! Yay Yuletide!

Bill & Ted
It's About Time. Bill/Ted.

Bend It Like Beckham
Rah! Rah!. Sweet Jess/Jules. Sometimes you just want a classic, you know?

Babysitters Club
Should Auld Acquaintance Be So Hot. Byron/Jeff. Clearly nostalgia hour here in the Yuletide recs today.

Buckaroo Banzai
Latest Issue. A nicely-constructed little meta-ish thing.

Call Me By Your Name
Sweetly, Before the Mystery Ends. Oliver POV.

Crazy Rich Asians
The Bamboo Bridge, Rachel/Astrid.

Words My Mother Taught Me, Rachel/Nick.

Dead Poets Society
Saturdays at the Twilight Cabaret. This is either heartbreaking or you can choose to read it as an AU where it changes things. Neil, of course.

Petrichor. And this is the fantasy, that a moment of extra attention and effort can save the day, but it's well done, and goes on from there. Neil/Todd.

Imperial Radch
Longing. The delicate complexity of polyamory negotiation between Breq, Seivarden, and Mercy of Kalr.

Spinning Silver
True Masks. Miryem and the Staryk celebrate Purim.

Savor. Irina and Mirnatius and the process of healing.

Old Kingdom
A Memoir of the Flesh. Long, fucked up, powerfully written Nick/Sam post-Abhorsen.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
Hoped to finish reading this weekend, but one more day, I think.

Spinning Silver
say my name. A kink negotiation.

Ocean's 8
Road Trips Without Maps. Debbie/Lou.

Falling With Style. An interesting and unusual triangle between Daphne, Debbie, and Lou.

Second City. Okay, apparently I'm just into proposal stories between these two right now? Not usually my thing, but. Debbie/Lou.

As a Shrike to Your Thorn. Debbie/Lou, Fae AU!

Lord Peter Wimsey
A Winter's Afternoon. Short Peter/Harriet fluff.

Left Hand of Darkness
On the Ice. This is the simplest little Genly Ai & Estraven story but it took my breath away.

Something New in the Same Face. Of the fix-it genre, sweet and thoughtful and lovely and very worth it.

Chrestomanci
On Hockey, Tea, and Being Ordinary. In which Christopher manages to say something useful to Millie.

But Blank Lines Do Not Say Nothing. Julia has questions about her mother's past.

Howl's Moving Castle
if thou be'st born to strange sights. A baking misadventure.

Jane, Unlimited
Ivy, Unlimited. Not actually a rec - this is what I wrote this year.

I Want To Go Home!
Discerning and particular. Mike/Rudy.

Goblin Emperor
Csethiro Ceredin Speaks Her Mind. Interesting Csethiro POV on events of the book.

Fence
Double Touch. Aiden/Harvard.

Emma
An Example of Benevolent Selfishness. Emma/Jane Fairfax pre-slash - I wish there was another 10K of this actually getting them together, but it's a nice start.

Pern
On Wings of Song. Menolly/Mirrim is an obviously superior ship to Menolly/Sebell, fight me. And this is a lovely AU.

Blue Castle
Every Touch Until. Barney POV.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
I have no idea how I managed to get any Yuletide reading done in previous years while the kids were still on vacation and my parents were still around, but I recall that I did. But not this year. But now everything is back to normal, so, whee!

Temeraire
Memories of Unreal Things. A nice Blood of Tyrants Laurence/Tharkay.

Sandman
Cemetery Polka. Death/Thessaly, post-canon. Highly recommend this one.

Seraphina
snow on snow, snow on snow. Seraphina when she was younger.

The Shape of Water
The Weight of Drought. A little post-canon glimpse.

Queen's Thief
This is not a parallel, but a reversal. Attolia, wedding day.

the taste of dried-up hopes. Costis/Kamet, post-canon.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women
Some Sharper Truth. Olive/Elizabeth, post-movie.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
I have barely scratched the surface but I think I'll do more posts rather than fewer longer ones.

This is my story written for meee! Ocean's 8, Constance and Amita play pool and probably go steal some stuff INCLUDING EACH OTHER'S HEARTS: Stroke of Luck.
