I watched another season of this show, mostly because family members were interested. I apparently never even wrote anything about season 5. It actually feels impressive to me how much they're failing to land their plot beats? Like, *baffling* choices about what they showed in flashbacks vs just referred to in narration, like the kind of choices that seem like they must be explained by the animators going on strike or someone moving a deadline abruptly. And really poor use of the previouslys, like, apparently going by the wiki there were some scenes back in season 1 or 3 that would have helped give a little context to some things in this season that otherwise seemed completely out of nowhere, but they decided to only use the previouslys to review things from the immediately previous episodes you just saw instead of the stuff that you haven't thought about since 2019. Anyways, exactly one thing happened that I thought was neat, which was not enough. Read more... )

Scavengers Reign is so many things I love. Genuinely adult animation, visually gorgeous, genuine SF (as opposed to space opera or space fantasy or space action-adventure, not that there's anything wrong with any of those, but this feels rarer). Weird, inventive alien biology and a story that keeps it simple and lets the character beats and landscape shine. There's an obvious Miyazaki influence (Nausicaa, most of all, although also certain aspects of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) but also some print comics influence, I think? Like I'm having trouble putting my finger on who but sometimes there's a shot where I'm just like oh, this feels sort of familiar, whose art is that. It is definitely an adult show and is high on body horror, but is also quiet and hopeful and beautiful. I would not call it horror as a genre.

Sadly I am not going to get to see the last three episodes when they air this week - it's on Max, and our long-overdue cancellation of Max takes effect tomorrow - but probably I wouldn't have watched it at all if I hadn't had the excuse of needing to do so before losing the opportunity, so, hey, getting to see 9 episodes out of 12 is better than zero. I wasn't even really aware of it before we came across it while trying to find what we actually meant to watch. (This whole Max thing has been a farce, we kept it around for way, way too long intending to watch a couple of things, only to discover when we finally tried that neither was available any more, for who knows how long.) I will definitely nominate the series as a whole for Dramatic Long - they're 25 minute episodes, so even all 12 episodes will be a pretty reasonable quantity of runtime. God knows nine episodes felt shorter than that latest Avatar movie (although I didn't watch them in one sitting, I was breaking them up with chores and parenting and stuff. But I did watch them all today.) I'm hoping it becomes available for purchase somehow rather than subscription-only in time for more people to check it out before nominating season, although that doesn't seem to be how things work anymore, alas. (But if it did, I could finally see those last three episodes...)

Television, the thing I always forget to write down! I enjoyed it, some good moments, solid wrap-up to the series.

Has been brought to my attention I never wrote up either of these here. For the benefit of my future self going through my tags, I liked both - Turning Red was my favorite Pixar movie in awhile, the boyband stuff was so spot-on, and Ms. Marvel was so fun.

Previously on The Dragon Prince: one, two, three. Three years later I had actually forgotten how little I liked season three? Anyways, things have not improved. Clunky writing, cringy dialogue, giant chunk of exposition we had no reason to care about, bad pacing in general. Behind the cut, some complaining about specifics (really only read this if you want to read complaining).Read more... )

Wandavision. I wasn't sure I was going to watch this, but I had the unprecedented opportunity of two days with the house to myself, and it turns out 6 hours of television over two days isn't actually that crazy! Well, plus the movie yesterday, but even still! Watch an episode, do a chore, watch an episode, prep a meal... I've always been baffled by how people manage to watch all these different shows, but suddenly I was living this totally different life where it was possible. (Well, I had to watch the last ~90 minutes on my laptop because everyone came home, but, muahaha, now I have the ability to do that too, which I guess I could have all along, but hadn't. I guess I've sometimes watched Amazon stuff there? But now I also have our Disney+ password! I could watch anything! All the Pixar shorts I've been wanting to see! Incredible!)

Anyways, this show. I have thoughts and I'm going to put them all behind a cut. Read more... )

Maya and the Three, nine-episode animated fantasy series from the same director as Book of Life. I liked it! Really cool character and setting designs inspired by indigenous Mesoamerican and South American art, well-choreographed exciting fights and action sequences, voice acting that gave the characters some real character, and writing more interesting than many kids' shows. Had a terrible case of "men are built like houses, women are built like twigs" syndrome, but clearly Western animation has just decided that humans are crazy sexually dimorphic like that, and we're not going to get over it until someone does something stunning and really different, stylistically, and everyone decides to imitate that. (Apparently little girls are going nuts for Luisa merchandise from Encanto? Maybe that will help?) Anyways, it was particularly annoying in this case because [spoilers] the mom is pregnant in the last few episodes, and is still tiny compared with the dad, and, like, fuck you, when I was pregnant I shook the fucking earth when I walked (and it was *awesome*), if there's any woman who should get to be Visibly Large Onscreen it's a late-term pregnant lady.

I always lag so much more at writing anything about these than about books.

Watchmen. Clever and well-done, except for a few characterization details I just couldn't buy that clearly let them set up things they wanted to do. But I'm definitely glad we finally watched it.

Encanto. So pretty! Hair animation has come so far! The internet seems to be really into the Bruno song but for me the standout song was Luisa's song, "Surface Pressure". The third-act climax and resolution didn't do a lot for me - this was no Moana - but the premise was great, so, hey. (Also some of the details of the house gave me so much nostalgia for my favorite restaurant when I was little, Casa de Bandini in San Diego's Old Town, which was the next best thing to Disneyland when I was, like, 6. The tiles, the courtyard, the bougainvillea. I was very pre-programmed, watching Encanto, to find it magical. (And now that I'm nostalgic, fuck you to Delaware North for ruining it.))

Hilda and the Mountain King A sweet and cute conclusion to Hilda's story. Except that apparently there's also going to be a third season?? I am confused. Anyways, if you like the show, more or less an extra-long episode, and if you don't know the show, probably pretty incomprehensible.

We decided to do a month of HBO+ to watch In The Heights [ETA: which we enjoyed] and some Hugo stuff, and so we also finally watched the other nine episodes of Lovecraft Country! I overall liked it a lot and thought it was a good adaptation, although I am a sucker for highly attractive people and I'm sure I was biased by that. Although, on the flip side, I could have done with the gore being dialed back a bit, especially because we somehow ended up watching the very worst episode for it while my parents were here, and they were pretty taken aback (also had the most sex, and sexual violence, which hadn't been a thing onscreen before that point, which I guess teaches me to try to look up some episode-specific content tags before watching anything with my parents).

I have some more specific thoughts behind the cut, with spoilers for both the show and the book.Read more... )

We watched the first episode on YouTube and it was so good I'm tempted to actually pay for HBO so we can keep watching as it airs. I will probably talk myself out of that by tomorrow but damn. (If you haven't read the book, highly recommended, I wrote about it here.)

I guess I never wrote anything about Kipo season 1 because I'm terrible about ever remembering to review TV but we finished Kipo season 2 and enjoyed it. Uh, and She-Ra season 5. And, um... Steven Universe? Oh, no, I did say something about that. I guess I'm losing faith we can ever get an animated episode onto the Dramatic Short ballot and that makes me less interested in trying to have stuff to say about them. Although, that's dumb, I enjoy reviewing lots of stuff that doesn't have a chance in hell. Well, I don't know. Maybe I just don't have anything to say about TV.

... maybe I *used* to have stuff to say about TV... when it wasn't canonically gay, and so I had do my own work on the shipping front? When shows came out an episode at a time and you would wonder what would be in the next one, and also other people were more or less watching at the same time as you were? When I wasn't watching with my kids? Hmm.

Anyways, I like Kipo, I hope we get a third season.

I'm not great at remembering to review tv, but I'll probably want to nominate the Steven Universe Future finale for something next year. Good stuff.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
Josh and I watched Russian Doll! I really liked it - clever, compelling, well-constructed. Might even vote for it over my own nominees, although I think I'll need to watch Captain Marvel again to decide about that. (Oh, no, the burden...)
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
My kids continue to enjoy this show but for me the relative proportions of awesome and cringy have crossed into negative territory (plus an unfortunate share of nonsensical). There's so much potential and they're trying so hard but the dialogue was clunky and the pacing was weird and... meh.
psocoptera: ink drawing of celtic knot (Default)
I may post later with more thoughts but an overall thumbs up to She-Ra season 4. I'm curious at some point to start looking into which 2019 episodes people are excited about nominating for the Hugo Dramatic Short... although I also may not really care because I care so much more about getting "Change Your Mind", the Steven Universe episode, onto the ballot, and even that seems like it's going to be a reach given that we couldn't last year. (But, momentum?)

Good Omens

We watched it, it was good, it'll be up for the Dramatic Long next year against Endgame and Captain Marvel and the Star Wars movie and I think could take it.

Lego Movie 2
My favorite part of this movie was that at one point we see a scene of a whole bunch of 80s space Lego and I sat bolt upright in my seat and gasped in glee and Quentin reached over and patted me like yes Mom we know you're very excited. Anyways this was fine, not as good as the first one or the Batman one but better than the Ninjago one, had some good jokes and cute references, I liked that they showed Lego Friends and Lego playing together.

How To Train Your Dragon 3
Definitely felt like a weaker story than the first two but I love these movies so much. (Maybe someday we'll see if the TV show is any good.) I felt like there was really only one big question - were they going to do that - and (spoilers) Read more... ).

Dragon Prince Season 2
Somehow even in this extremely diverse world full of people of color and gorgeous lesbian moms and kick-ass female secondary characters, the most interesting person in the world is a mediocre white boy! Ok, I'm being unfair, I do like Callum, and I'm definitely enjoying the show, and that was a much more thorough explanation of Rawls' veil of ignorance than I was expecting from an animated kids' fantasy show. It just... has sort of the same feeling as Lego 2, where there's this assumption about who gets to be at the center of the story and whose character development we're going to spend the most time watching happen onscreen. Also Steven Universe: I looked through the 2018 episodes to see what I might like to nominate for Dramatic Short and came up with Lars of the Stars/Jungle Moon, A Single Pale Rose, and Reunited, the latter two of which were already on The Spreadsheet which is a good sign that I'm successfully converging with other SU fans on episode choice. And Josh and the kids also picked those, when I asked their opinions. Promise from She-Ra is also on The Spreadsheet; Junie prefers the finale but I think I agree with the spreadsheeter. That would be my four remaining slots after Dirty Computer, shutting out Dragon Prince, but I'm not sure what episode of that I would have picked anyways.

(ETA: Lars of the Stars and Jungle Moon have different writers/directors, so I think they count as different episodes. As much as I adore Lars of the Stars I decided to put Jungle Moon on the wiki and will go with it as my nominee, it's the one that got an Emmy nomination and thus maybe it's slightly more likely to have other nominations?)

Ralph Breaks The Internet. A lot of jokes and references in this that I wouldn't expect the kids to get, but they seemed to enjoy it. As a boring, uptight mom person, I did not entirely love the message that cheerful and positive aesthetics have to equal simplistic and boring underpinnings and kids have to "graduate" to ultraviolence if they want something more interesting. It was funny, and I guess it might be true, but that just seems sad. Also did not love the gross animal-harm joke in the mid-credits, like, sorry to be humorless in my old age, but did we need that? Anyways, the princess parts were good.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. This is such a good reboot and I'm really happy to be living in the narrative renaissance when even children's media can have plot arcs and continuity and emotional complexity. I kinda want to wriiiite but I shouldn't even think about that until the Yulebears get fed.

The Talisman Ring, Georgette Heyer. Didn't really mean to read another Heyer so soon but my library ebook pipeline management skills failed to pop a timely alternative. My why-I-want-to-read-this note for this one just said "hijinks", and indeed, it had them, and they were fun, although I sort of thought there might be one more twist than there was. I'm never quite sure what counts as screwball but this probably was.

The Dragon Prince, Netflix animated series from Aaron Ehasz. Pros: both the kids and adults of us were into it; really interesting animation; a whole pack of likeable characters and a good central conflict. Con: I'd have to rewatch certain scenes again but I don't think it passed the Bechdel-Wallace Test. (Scenes in question in a comment below; ETA: I have realized I'm wrong, but it's still not great in this aspect.) We're all hoping it'll get picked up for a second season, anyways.
