The Marquis Who Mustn't, Courtney Milan, 2023 novel, het romance. I loved 99% of this book, with one exception that I found upsetting and out-of-character as I had understood the character. I vaguely recall not liking her novella Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure for what I think might have been similar reasons. But, anyways, aside from being thrown and put off by that one part of that one scene, I loved the characters and the way their relationship developed, good stuff.
Spoilers:
I liked the handling of the mother-daughter relationship, and I thought Milan did a good job with the inclusion of asexual characters and how the mom might talk about that and how Naomi's understanding of her parents' marriage might evolve.
And I know Milan went out of her way to establish that the acid would only be painful and not permanently damaging but no, sorry, you don't do that, I can't read this character I cared about as someone who would do that and I can't read this other character I cared about as still wanting to marry someone who would do that. So as far as I'm concerned it just didn't happen, tra la.
