In an Absent Dream, Seanan McGuire. Hugo novella and book, um, four? yes, four, of the Wayward Children series. This is another prequel story, which, like the last prequel, didn't especially interest me. There are people who can pull off a story where we already know the end, and still make it surprising how we get there, or make us care in a fresh way, but McGuire is really not one of those authors for me. Must have worked for a bunch of people though since it's on the Hugo ballot, so, like, I'm glad McGuire is writing this series people love! Yay! For my purposes, at least it was a fast read.

McGuire's on my list of Authors Who Don't Quite Work For Me And Maybe I Should Give Them Another Try But So Many Books, Etc., Etc. She's also on the subset list of Authors I Feel Vaguely Bad About For Not Giving Extra Tries Because Structural Oppression, Etc.

I really enjoyed the first inCryptid book, and then I read the prequel novella for Wayward Children that was free from Tor some time ago, and it left me feeling rather not good. I haven't read any of the other Wayward Children books, but maybe if I read them in publication order (my usual preferred order) they'd work better for me.
